About The Metcalfe Society

Founded in 1980, The Metcalfe Society today stands in the forefront of the world of Genealogy as one of the largest and most respected one-name study groups, with almost 1,500 members past and present, home and overseas.

It is dedicated to supporting anyone interested in their Metcalfe (and all spelling variants) family history and acts as the principal link between branches in the home country and those settled worldwide.

As a UK Registered Charity 1000879, The Metcalfe Society currently holds over 94,000 individual Metcalfe "ancestors" on the constantly expanding Computer Index. All Metcalfes (and spelling variants) have been indexed from the 1992 edition of the IGI and the births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales 1837-1983 of the Civil Registration Index held by the General Register Office (GRO).

Fully registered under the Data Protection Act, (our registration number is M0031084 - full details in our Members Only Area), The Society is also a member of the Federation of Family History Societies, the Guild of One Name Studies and Council of Family Societies.

Our unique collection of records is compiled from many sources - Metcalfes have been discovered in India and North America from the 1600s. Canada, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa all saw clan members amongst their earliest settlers. The Society welcomes descendants to membership of The Society where free access is available to the substantial records to aid their research. The Society also publishes a journal - The "Mecca News" - three times a year which is sent to our members.

The annual October "Mecca Muster", including the AGM, provides an opportunity to study all society records and meet with correspondents and newly discovered family members. Members from all over the UK are joined by visitors from overseas to taste the welcome Yorkshire and The Society have to offer.
