This provides a summary of the information and
facilities available within The Metcalfe Society to help you decide whether or
not you wish to become a member.
The Metcalfe Society was established in 1980. Our aims are to encourage
research into those families bearing the Metcalfe surname (and all spelling
variants), through the interchange of information and assistance. The society
is open to anyone with an interest in researching Metcalfe ancestors; not only
those bearing the name.
The Mecca News.
Members receive our journal, the "Mecca News", which is
published three times per year (April, August, December). Members are
encouraged to contribute articles for publication together with pleas for
help etc.
Subscriptions.
Member subscriptions are valid from 1st January to 31st December each year,
regardless of joining date. Those joining late in the subscription year will
immediately receive all the journals so far published in that year. If you wish
your subscription to commence on 1st January of the following year, please
mark the form accordingly. Subscription rates and methods of payment
are outlined on the New Member Application Form.
Charitable Status/Affiliations.
The Metcalfe Society is a registered charity, and non-profit making association
with any surplus funds being used to expand membership and maintain records. We
strive to provide a wide spectrum of accurate, comprehensive information for
our members. The Society is a member of the Guild of One Name Studies,
Federation of Family History Societies and Council of Family Societies.
Free access to Society computer-based records.
The ever-growing comprehensive computer-based records are the societys
most important and valuable assets, a summary of which is outlined below.
Before members do personal research, they can check with our Archivist, as part
of the research may have already been completed. Members are entitled to free
searches by sending queries, together with a stamped addressed envelope,
directly to our Archivist. Non-members will be asked to pay £20 per search
and 50p per page. Members receive full details about what is available in the
New Members Introduction Booklet.
The Book : "Metcalfe - History of the Clan"
In October 1998, after 4 years work, the society published the book
"Metcalfe - History of the Clan". It is a must for those people who
find the name, Metcalfe, somewhere in their family tree - and especially as a
present to family members. In addition, those with an interest in the Dales,
Yorkshire, social history & family history in general will find this book
highly appealing. The first edition of 1,000 copies sold out within a year with
a reprinted second edition now being available

Who joins The Metcalfe Society.
We have a worldwide membership of over 630 current members, and welcome
complete beginners with as much enthusiasm as we do those more proficient in
their research. Over the years we have had much success in uniting members with
common ancestry and it may be your turn to hear details of a newly -traced
generation or more. However, we have also had a few members, who in fact did
not welcome being presented with a lot of new information. They preferred to do
their own hunting. If this is your wish, please advise the society on joining
and we will respect your wishes.
