Metcalfe Posts
The Metcalfe Society knows that some members and non-members like to do their family research themselves. Therefore everyone is invited to post notices here to request help relating to their Metcalfe (and spelling variants) family research. If you are a member, may we request you to provide your membership number when posting your request on the noticeboard.

Unfortunately, The Society does not have the resources at the moment to be able to research and respond to queries posted here but is certainly willing to promote the pleas for help.

Non-members may like to note that by becoming a member, The Society is able to perform a full search through all Society records free of charge .... so why not click here to become a member and essentially receive a professional genealogical research service for your Metcalfe line ..... all for the nominal cost of a year's subscription to The Society. The Metcalfe Society is recognised as the world's largest one-name society both in terms of membership and the amount of data we hold.

Let us help you!

My Husbands’s (Trevor), Grandfather came from the Village of Ashwell in Suffolk. Trevor’s Dad moved to Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk and was what all little boys wanted to be, a train driver. Owen has passed on now, but we still live in Bury St Edmunds. Recently Trevor’s Mum moved into a Carehome near Hawstead, Suffolk and there is a row of Almshouses well kept and lived in. There is also a pub called The Metcalfe Arms. Any further information would be grately appreciated.

I'm just curious if I still have any Metcalfe relatives still living in or around Barnard Castle. My great grand-father was George Robert Metcalfe and I was told he was a Bobby there. He married Rose Kelly, moved to America in late 1800's settled in Beverly Farms, MA & had 16 kids, my grandfather Alfred being the oldest, who became a Boston police officer. He married Agnes Irwin and they had 1 son, (my dad) Irwin J.(Bob) Metcalfe. I have 2 brothers and 1 sister. My grandfather's sister Charlotte (Metcalfe) Stanley is still living in Beverly, MA. She just turned 106 years old.

Searching for information/descendants of the Metcalf’s that were in Lydd & Rolvenden, Kent early 1700’s to late 1800’s. I know of a William Metcalf born in Lydd in 1733 who is a half brother to my Francis Metcalf, 5th great grandfather (b. 1740 and died 1826 in Rolvenden). William’s other half brothers (all mentioned in his will) are George, Edward & Henry. Some of the brothers then moved to Battle in Sussex and one son of Francis, Henry Metcalfe, settled in New York.
I am keen to contact any descendants and trace where this line were prior to Kent.

I do not know anything about the loving man who adopted me when I was 20 years old, even though I had lived with him and my mother for several years..and neither do my sisters.. His name was John Clifford Metcalfe. He worked for some time on the B & B gang (Bridge and building ) gang for the railroad, in the interior of British Columbia, Kimberley, Cranbrook, Ft. STeele, Nelson, area, until he married my mother, and settled down in Cranbrook B.C. and worked for A. & E Jones,( Home and carpendry business) None of us know his mothers name, his fathers name, where they came from, what thier talents were, or even from what counytry they came from...although it appears obvious that his parents were from England.
Any information would be greatly appreciated,as I have been trying to find out for years who were his parents, and why we do not have any information on them.
The name exists, as do I, and mine, as Metcalfes, and I would like have something about the history of the man who adopted me, and his heritage, so that I can pass it along to the family that my wife and I have blessed to create. Thankyou.

Does anyone have any information about Irish Medcalfs? My gg grandfather was born in Delgany, County Wicklow in 1802 and came to Canada with parents and 9 siblings. We have lots of information about family history on this side of the pond but can find find no connections in Ireland. Found Medcalf grave stones in Wicklow but no idea if they are part of the family. Have belonged to Metcalfe Society for 5 years and have had no leads at all. Also - out family crest is different from the Metcalfe one. Ours has 3 calves on a shield with a talbot on top of the shield. The motto is 'semper paratus'. Does anyone out there have a similar family crest?

I'm looking for information on my great-grandfather, William Henry Metcalf. He lived in England and died around 1958. He married Marjorie Carter around 1927 and they had three children: Patricia, Beryl, and Shirley. William and Marjorie separated in 1945; their daughter Shirley (my grandmother) came to Canada at that time to live with William's sister Emme. Sadly, Shirley was killed in a car accident in 1964. William had at least one brother named Charles Metcalf, and sisters Emme, Winnefred, and another who died in the 1906 earthquake of San Francisco. William's wife Majorie died in 1994. She was the daughter of Frank and Annie Louise Carter and was the eldest of 12 children. She had the following siblings: Dereck Carter (deceased), Mary Carter (deceased), Kathleen (Kit) Carter (deceased), John Carter (deceased), Joan Carter (deceased), Molly Carter (living in Australia), Donald Carter (living in Southend, Essex, England), Joyce Carter (living in Pinner, London, England), Kenneth Carter (deceased), Patricia Carter (living in Hampshire, England), Peter Carter (disappeared). Unfortunately, I don't know any contacts for this family. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I am searching for information on my gt-gt-gt-grandfather, Miles Metcalfe, 1793-1870. He married (1) Sara Olivia GUY of Chipping Ongar (my gt-gt-gt-grandmother; 17??-183?) and (2) Mary Ann TAYLOR (1791-1876), of Cley (Nfk). Miles' and Sara's daughter, Elizabeth, married William SMITH of Witton-by-Walsham (Nfk), and Miles is buried in Witton churchyard. The marriage record of his second marriage says his father was William Metcalfe, yeoman, and Miles gives his occupation as 'draper of Plymouth', but I have no idea of his place of birth. Anything on Miles or his forebears would be appreciated!

My family has a bible containing Metcalfe family details. It is inscribed "Marion Metcalfe, 1873, Darlington". There are names and dates for her immediate family in the book. So far I haven't found the link between the Metcalfes and the Rookes - Rooke is the branch of my family that brought the bible into my possession. I'm currently waiting for a birth certificate which I hope will show me the link. If my list of names & dates is likely to be of use to you, please let me know and I will send it.

We would be very interested to know if anyone has details of a Thomas Metcalfe born c 1821 in York. In 1851 he was living in The Shambles in York with a Harriet Swales born c 1823 in York…..she has a five month old baby Thomas born 1850 in Walmgate York. Thomas Metcalf and Harriet Swales are recorded on that census as brother and sister!!!! Harriet appears to have never married and young Thomas appears to have always been a Swales. Harriet’s mother also appears to have been an unmarried Swales (and seems to have a brother Frederick Swales) We suspect that Thomas Metcalfe was probably the father of Thomas Swales (although there is another line of thought about Thomas’ father being his grandfather William Swales. We believe we have seen a death for Thomas Metcalfe not long after 1851 but do you think we can find it again??

I was in Kansas City last week, and stayed at the White Haven Motel on Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, Kansas, a suburb of Kansas City. I was wondering if anyone knew what Metcalf that street is named after. It's a major north-south street, so I assume the Metcalf is someone of major importance in the history of that area. Thank you.

I am searching for information on my g grandfather, George Metcalf, who was born in Askrigg, Yorkshire County, England on August 4, 1833. He came to America sometime in the early 1850s and settled in Wyoming Valley, Iowa County, Wisconsin. There he married Sarah Woodward Alderson in 1858. Sarah died in 1890 and George remarried in 1893 to Geneva Dudgean, also of Wisconsin. George died in 1899 and is buried in Wyoming Valley, Wisconsin. I am especially anxious to obtain information regarding the identity of George Metcalf's parents and other information regarding his roots in Askrigg, Yorkshire County, England.
