| 28 Dec 2004 | Fred Baldwin | I have, recently, come into possession of a "Centre Seconds Chronograph" pocket watch which was handed down to me from my great grandfather. The name on its face is ................... William A Metcalfe 18 King William Street Blackburn. Do your records recall such a shop-keeper/watchmaker in the mid-late 1800's? |
| 20 Dec 2004 | Val Gentile | Trying to trace the birth date of my great grandfather. Francis Metcalfe born in Westminster between 1849 & 1853. In the 1881 census he states his age as 32, but in the 1901 census he says he is 48. 1st wife Elizabeth Nott married 13/3/1871 died 1872?. Then married Elizabeth Virtu Bloomfield (bn 1859?) on 9 April 1876 in St George The Martyr, Southwark, London, EV died 1905 aged 45yrs. On both marriage certs his occupation is entered as Seaman & Mariner & for age it reads Full. I have tried several websites with no success, can anyone help. I cannot get his b/cert until I have the ref nbrs. |
| 10 Dec 2004 | Maryanne Jefferson | I was hoping that someone would be able to help me break
through my brick wall: My GGG grandfather was William Metcalf b. Sept 4, 1844 in England, his USA Death Certificate states that his parents are Thomas Metcalf & Hannah and he was born in Comwell, England (Comwell might a error). I have found his mother Hannah Waller Metcalf Hemphrey USA Death Certificate and it states she was born in London, England in 1815. I have found Hannah and William and his sister Sarah in the USA. I have never found his father or any other siblings in the USA. Sarah's USA Death Certificate states that her parents are Thomas and Hannah. Hannah's Death Certificate states that she was the widow of ? Hemphrey and her father was John Waller & mother unknown. I can not find William's birth certificate or Sarah's birth certificate. I can not also find Thomas and Hannah's Marriage certificate. I do not know if Thomas died and Hannah remarried in USA or England. I was never able to find Mr. Hemphrey in the USA. If you can shed any light on this confusing brick wall, I would be forever great full!! |

| 30 Oct 2004 | Alyson Gibson | Please can anyone help with our query about Anthony Metcalfe - born approx between 1795-1798. My g.g.g.grandfather is George Metcalfe of Abbottside/Hawes who married Eleanor Iveson by licence on 10.01.1842. He was a husbandman of Shaw in Abbottside at the time of his marriage. His father was called Anthony Metcalfe and was a Farmer. We think that this Anthony married Isabella Raw (of Snaizholme) on 16.01.1819 - with a George Metcalfe being one of the witnesses. Does anyone know anything further about this Anthony - we are "stuck" on him and cannot get further back! |

Thomas married Georgina Cleghorn (b 1808 Wick, Caithness) in Edinburgh, he was a surgeon and I believe he may have trained at the Royal College of Surgeons. On the 1851 census Georgina is a widow living in Norton, I don't know where or when Thomas died. By 1861 Georgina had moved to West Hartlepool with her children Georgina, Elizabeth, William Francis, John Cleghorn, (named after her father) and Charles George Metcalfe. I know Georgina (child) married Michael Lund, my gr grandmother Elizabeth Marion married James Stabler and John married Eleanor Simpson. I can't find a date or place of death for Georgina Metcalfe. I would love to hear from anyone who can help, I have a register entry for both Georgina's birth and her marriage with Thomas Metcalfe. |

| 26 Jan 2004 | Paul Metcalfe | Does anybody out there have any information concerning my
paternal Great Grandfather, Wheatley Bushby Metcalfe? He was born in Wetherby in 1874 and married Susanna Bell in Northumberland in 1902. My Grandad George was born in 1905. Wheatley Bushby, known to the family as Bertie, was named after two Colonels from the British Army. I would particularly like more information about his parents, and how our strand of the family is related to Rowntrees of York. Apparently one of the Rowntree daughters married 'beneath her' to a forebear of mine who was a lowly Colonel in the Army. She was thereafter excluded from the family until her death, whereupon her body was apparently entombed in the family grave. Any further information would be most welcome. |
